Do You Have a Spider Problem?

Although spiders do not transmit diseases to humans, their bites can cause allergic reactions or infections. The presence of spiders can also be the cause of psychological distress (Arachnophobia).

Spider webs and silk cocoons can affect the appearance of a home, business or office building. In some industries, the presence of spiders can go as far as to cause sanctions.

When should you be alarmed?

Although most people consider spiders to be unpleasant, it is beneficial to have a small amount of spiders in the house. Most spiders feed on pests, do not transmit diseases to humans, and generally tend to flee when confronted by humans. They are thus a natural and effective insect prevention method!

However, if you notice spiders on the ceiling, on the walls or near baseboards (especially during the day), you notice an increase in spider webs or silk cocoons, it is essential to communicate with an experienced exterminator.

How to prevent an infestation?

Several steps can be taken to avoid the presence of a large number of spiders. Here are some tips that will prevent infestation:

  • Vacuum and clean regularly: small food particles in the carpet may attract insects that are usually hunted by spiders.
  • Reduce hiding places: Dark, damp places (including piles of firewood near the house, cluttered garages and basements, and behind the washer and dryer) are the best places for spiders. Keeping places clean and with high traffic will encourage spiders to take shelter elsewhere.
  • Remove spider webs: spiders do not like doing the same job twice. By taking away their webs, they will prefer finding shelter elsewhere.
  • In the summer, install yellow light bulbs outside: this type of light bulb does not attract certain species of insects. Without prey, spiders will go elsewhere.
  • Prevent them from coming in: use window screens, caulk doors and windows, and fill openings in foundation walls.
  • Get rid of silk cocoons: Cocoons are egg capsules and must be removed immediately. These can contain up to 100 eggs.

Despite these steps, if the number of spiders on the premises starts to increase significantly and the preventative actions do not interrupt the arachnids’ multiplication, it may have an infestation.

Common Spider Species in Quebec

There are five types of common spiders in Quebec:

  • House Spiders: Varies in colour (from dirty white to nearly black) we can differentiate this type of spider by its front legs which are much longer than its other legs.
  • Cellar Spiders: Reaching up to 7 cm, this type of spider can be identified by its long legs.
  • Fishing Spiders: Reaching up to 7.5 cm, they are found mostly near cottages and streams.
  • Black Widow Spiders: Rare in Canada, this type of spider has a shiny black body, with a red mark on the abdomen.
  • Wolf Spiders: Measuring about 3 cm, this type of spider hunts its prey rather than weaving webs. That is why they are mostly found on the ground outdoors, in gardens, woodlands or even beaches.
